Chelsea will face off against fellow Premier League outfit Newcastle United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
The Blues’ opponents were confirmed on Tuesday evening when Newcastle beat AFC Wimbledon in a rescheduled third round tie.
A solitary goal from Fabian Schar from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time was enough to earn a hard-fought win over the League Two side at St. James’ Park. The original tie was due to be played at AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium, however the playing surface at the stadium suffered severe flooding damage last week.
The club’s managing director confirmed that over 100,000 litres of water had to be pumped out of the stadium in the aftermath of flooding, with the club unsure of when the venue will reopen.
Newcastle pledged £15,000 to a JustGiving page set up to help with repair costs, and also gave Wimbledon 45% of gate receipts for the game at St. James’ Park.
The win for Newcastle sets up a bumper Premier League tie in the fourth round on 29 October, with both teams set to come into the game in impressive form.
Chelsea have been scoring goals for fun of late in both cup and league games, firing five past Barrow in the third round of the Carabao Cup before beating Brighton and Hove Albion 4-2 in the Premier League.
Newcastle also secured an impressive result at the weekend, drawing 1-1 with Premier League title holders Manchester City at home.
The fourth round game between the sides is scheduled to take place at Stamford Bridge.
