Ipswich vs Aston Villa: Preview, predictions and lineups

Ipswich Town continue the search for their first Premier League victory of the season when they host Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

The Tractor Boys have only lost two of their opening five Premier League matches – defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City – and have accumulated three points following three successive draws. In front of a packed Portman Road crowd, they will be aiming to take advantage of a Villa side who were in Carabao Cup action midweek.

The Villans beat Wycombe Wanderers to secure their spot in the fourth round of the competition, but the games continue to come thick and fast for Unai Emery’s men. They also host Bayern Munich on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

Their Premier League form has been impressive, though. Despite failing to keep a clean sheet in their opening five matches of the 2024/25 season, Villa have managed four victories, most recently beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 in a West Midlands derby.

Here is 90min’s guide to Ipswich vs Aston Villa.

Kalvin Phillips

On-loan Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips missed the 1-1 draw with Southampton last weekend and is a doubt to feature against Villa on Sunday due to a thigh problem. Harry Clarke and Nathan Broadhead could return to the squad.

Elsewhere, there should be little variation in Kieran McKenna’s lineup. The Northern Irishman has been reluctant to make significant changes to his XI this term and will likely call upon a very similar side to the one that took a late point from St. Mary’s Stadium.

Ipswich predicted lineup vs Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Muric; Tuanzebe, O’Shea, Greaves, Davis; Morsy, Cajuste; Burns, Hutchinson, Szmodics; Delap.

John McGinn

John McGinn added his name to the injury list last Saturday as he pulled his hamstring in the victory over Wolves. He’s expected to be out for at least a few weeks, joining long-term absentees Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara in the treatment room.

Diego Carlos injured himself in the warm-up ahead of the midweek win at Wycombe but could return this weekend. However, Jaden Philogene will miss out again and Matty Cash is unlikely to return at right-back, while Lucas Digne remains a doubt after being withdrawn at half-time last Saturday.

Aston Villa predicted lineup vs Ipswich (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Bogarde, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen; Onana, Tielemans; Bailey, Rogers, Ramsey; Watkins.

Ipswich harbour hopes of a first victory of the season in any competition but their chances are slim against a well-drilled and relentless Villa side. The Tractor Boys have generally offered up a compact defence this term but they may be undone by a Villa forward line starting to hit their stride.

Morgan Rogers has sparkled in the opening weeks and registered two assists against Wolves, while Ollie Watkins has found his goalscoring touch once more. While one eye may be on the midweek Bayern battle, Villa should have enough quality and depth to punish newly-promoted Ipswich.

Prediction: Ipswich 1-3 Aston Villa
