Liverpool Women vs Man City Women: Preview, predictions and lineups

Liverpool return to Anfield on Sunday afternoon as they host last season’s WSL runners-up Manchester City.

Matt Beard’s side don’t have the best record at the Premier League stadium, but the Reds boss will hope the switch up in opponents will help change their fortunes. Along with City, Liverpool will also face Everton and Manchester United at Anfield this season.

Gareth Taylor’s side reigned victorious in the Champions League midweek, celebrating a 2-0 win over back-to-back winners Barcelona.

They will also be hoping to build on their unbeaten start to the WSL season, while Liverpool will be determined to make it two wins from two after they secured their first victory of the campaign over Spurs last weekend.

Here’s 90min’s preview of Sunday’s clash at Anfield.

Sophie Lundgaard

Liverpool have just one fit goalkeeper available in Rachael Laws, although Beard confirmed last week that Teagan Micah is closing in on a return. Ceri Holland will also be absent for a number of weeks after picking up a foot injury.

Defender Jenna Clark felt a tightness in her calf over the weekend, so was forced to drop to the bench against Spurs. Midfielder Sofie Lundgaard was substituted in the first half in last weekend’s victory, and it has since been confirmed she suffered an ACL injury.

Grace Fisk is yet to feature in a matchday squad this season, although Beard confirmed ahead of their opening WSL game against Leicester City that she is ‘two to four weeks’ away from a return. Liverpool will hope it is the former, rather than the latter.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Man City (3-5-2): Laws; Matthews, Bonner, Clark; Hinds, Nagano, Hobinger, Kapocs, Parry; Smith, Roman Haug.

Jess Park

Midfielder Jess Park returned to the City squad against Barcelona after she missed the 2-0 victory over West Ham with a foot injury. Striker Khadija Shaw was also back in the team and back among the goals after starting on the bench againt the Hammers.

Jill Roord returned to action over the last week, playing the first 45 minutes against West Ham and getting more minutes as a substitute in the Champions League.

Man City predicted lineup vs Liverpool (4-3-3): Yamashita; Layzell, Aleixandri, Greenwood, Casparij; Park, Hasegawa, Roord; Kelly, Shaw, Hemp.

Despite last season’s heroics and a fourth place finish in the WSL, Liverpool have, so far, failed to impress in 2024/25. They were held to draws against Leicester City and West Ham, and it took a last-gasp contentious penalty to snatch a win over Tottenham.

City, on the other hand, have won two and drawn just once in their opening WSL game against Arsenal. While their game midweek against Barcelona in the Champions League could have an impact, Taylor has the squad depth available to make the necessary changes to personnel, while not losing any quality.

It’s difficult to see anything other than a City win. Defensively, Liverpool have looked vulnerable at times this season and the visitors have the attacking quality to punish them.

Prediction: Liverpool 0-3 Man City
