Man Utd confirm deal for highly-rated youngster after Arsenal exit

Manchester United have confirmed they have signed highly-rated young forward Chido Obi-Martin after he left Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The 16-year-old’s schoolboy contract with the Gunners expired over the summer and it was reported United were exploring a potential deal for the record-breaking striker.

Obi-Martin, who scored 32 goals in just 18 games for Arsenal’s Under-18s last season, was also said to have been won over by the Red Devils following contact with legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is on Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff at Old Trafford.

United have now confirmed the teenager has been added to the club’s group of first-year scholars alongside winger Samuel Lusale and right-back James Overy, both 17, who signed from Perth Glory and Crystal Palace respectively.

United’s academy director Nick Cox said: “We welcome Samuel Lusale, Chido Obi-Martin and James Overy to the club. All three young players will join up with our professional development phase as they adjust to life in Manchester and become acquainted with their new team-mates.

“It can be a difficult process for some players, while others slot right in. Whatever the scenario, our staff will be on hand to care for these young boys and make sure their experience at the academy is an overwhelmingly positive one that sets them up for life.

“Good to luck to Samuel, Chido and James, well done to our recruitment team and congratulations to the families and wider support networks involved in these boys’ journeys. Signing for Manchester United should be a proud day for everyone involved.”

Denmark youth international Obi-Martin will enter United’s ‘professional development phase’, where youngsters progress through the Under-18s and Under-21s in preparation for senior football.
