Newcastle ‘agree contract extension’ with Arsenal & Liverpool target

Newcastle United are reported to have struck a deal to extend the contract of winger Anthony Gordon amid interest in the England international from both Arsenal and Chelsea.

Gordon was heavily linked with a move away from Newcastle during the summer and it was even claimed that a deal had been struck to sell the Merseyside native to Liverpool for £75m before the Magpies managed to raise funds through the departures of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson and avoid PSR sanctions.

As the transfer window closed, Arsenal emerged as long-term admirers of Gordon but Newcastle officials made it clear they had plans to extend the 23-year-old’s contract.

Negotiations hit a handful of issues, notably a disagreement over salary, but the Daily Mail were the first to reveal a breakthrough had been made and an extension is now imminent.

Reports state that Gordon is set to sign a new six-year contract which, importantly, will not include a release clause.

Manager Eddie Howe refused to confirm the latest on Gordon’s future but made no secret of the club’s desire to keep hold of the England star.

“We love Anthony,” Howe began. “We’d love him to commit his future here. We’d love him to stay long-term at Newcastle and continue his excellent start to his career here.

“When you look at the broader piece of what he’s done since he’s arrived at the football club, I think he’s been magnificent for us. We need to try and help him get back to his very best levels. And if that means signing a new contract, then I’m all for that, to help him be settled and concentrate on his football.”
