The Wellsboro Junior High Soccer team scored three goals in the first half of their game with Athens yesterday afternoon to win 5-1.
“Our team had one of their best played matches, as a team, this
whole season,” head coach Derek Stevens said. “We showed our group is not only doing well now but they
are building for a successful future in the coming years.”
Just over two minutes into the contest Liam Stevens scored off a pass from Maddon Mascho to put the young Hornets up early. About 90 seconds later Haylie Smith scored from pass from Callen Novak to make it 2-0. Noak later scored in the 19th minute, assisted by Evan Rawson, to give Wellsboro a 3-0 lead.
Gage Baltzley, assisted by Smith, increased Wellsboro’s lead to 4-0 11:50 into the second half. After this Hornet goal the Wildcats got on the scoreboard to avoid the shut out, however, Baltzley struck again with 3:45 remaining.
The Hornet out shot Athens 12-4 on the afternoon. Benjamin Jackson (2) and Braydyn Lehman combined for 3 saves in goal.
Athens won the B game 2-0.
Wellsboro (7-1) hosts Troy on Tuesday.
