The Las Vegas Raiders made a bold move during Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos, benching Gardner Minshew in favor of Aidan O’Connell in the third quarter.
Despite the change, the Raiders couldn’t overcome their deficit, falling 18-34 to their division rivals.
Minshew’s performance left much to be desired, as he completed 12-of-17 passes for 137 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, while also taking two sacks.
O’Connell, who’s no stranger to stepping in mid-game, previously led a late touchdown drive in a Week 3 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
When faced with questions about his replacement post-game, Minshew maintained a professional demeanor.
“You know, it is what it is,” he told Sean Zittel of Vegas Sports Today. “Keep being a positive presence on the sideline. At the end of the day, no matter what my role is on the team, I’m gonna help the team any way I can.”

Minshew has been the primary starter for most of the 2024 season, accumulating 1,014 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions.
Meanwhile, O’Connell, coming off a solid rookie year in 2023 where he threw for 2,218 yards and 12 touchdowns, lost the starting job to Minshew during training camp but remains a capable backup who could potentially rejuvenate the struggling offense.
As the Raiders prepare for their Week 6 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Antonio Pierce faces some crucial decisions regarding the quarterback position.
The team’s struggles have highlighted the need to address this key role during the upcoming offseason, particularly in the draft.
Raiders fans are already turning their attention to the college ranks, scouting potential quarterback prospects like Shedeur Sanders, Carson Beck, Quinn Ewers, Cam Ward, and Jalen Milroe.
