Player Drops Hint After He Is Asked Directly About Claims That City Are Plotting £50M Move For Him

Manchester City target Martin Zubimendi has suggested that he will remain at Real Sociedad despite interest from the Premier League champions.

It was reported in the Spanish press earlier this week that the Cityzens are planning to make a move for the midfielder during the January transfer window. However, when asked about the rumours, Zubimendi replied:

“So far I have thought that the best thing was to be at my club. I am looking for my personal growth and I still have a lot to give to Real.”

Zubimendi does have a €60m (£50m) release clause so City could chance their arm in the New Year but many believe that the player will hold firm on his stance and stay in San Sebastian.

City will have competition for the player

If Zubimendi does have a change of heart in January or at the end of the season, Pep Guardiola’s side will not be the only team pursuing his signature.

Liverpool worked extremely hard to sign the 25-year-old last summer only for the deal to fall through. Arsenal also have a longstanding interest, but their decision to buy his teammate Mikel Merino may have led them to end their pursuit.

Are there any alternatives to Zubimendi?

Plenty of midfielders have been linked with City since Rodri picked up a season-ending injury against Arsenal.  The likes of Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella, Torino’s Samuele Ricci, Atalanta’s Ederson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton have all been mentioned in the rumour mill.

Guardiola has, though, said on more than one occasion in recent weeks that he is perfectly happy with the options he has available to him so there is no guarantee that reinforcements will be brought in. A lot could depend on City’s form between now and January.
