Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon are taking a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about their 2005 romantic comedy, Fever Pitch.
In a preview clip for The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress, 49, and The Tonight Show host, 50, shared behind-the-scenes stories and revealed the movie’s original ending.
Fever Pitch tells the story of Ben Wrightman (Fallon), a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan, and Lindsey Meeks (Barrymore), who fall in love amidst the excitement of the baseball season.
The film’s climax features the Red Sox’s historic comeback against the Yankees and their World Series victory.
However, Barrymore revealed that the original ending had the Red Sox losing, as they hadn’t won in 86 years.
“The original ending was that we’re old people, and we’re dressing up as old people, and the Red Sox finally win,” Barrymore said.
Fallon added, “As we’re filming, this is baseball history; as we’re filming this film, they make it into the wild card, then they make it into the playoffs. It’s the most magical year.”
Barrymore continued, “And we happen to have cameras at every single one of these games… We were flying down to the final game of the World Series, and Fox Sports said, ‘We’ll let you use our cameras. You cannot bring movie cameras to the finale.”
Fallon recalled, “No one knew we were filming the movie, and we asked Fox not to air any footage of us at the game together because we planned to use it in the film… And they go, ‘Yeah, sure.'”
However, the broadcast network ultimately showed Fallon and Barrymore on the mound, sharing a kiss after the Red Sox won.
“I still have the sand from the mound,” Barrymore said.
Fallon proudly shared, “My baseball hat that I had made filthy because any real baseball fan has a dirty hat that they’ve had since high school. It’s disgusting and has salt stains. That hat is in the Baseball Hall of Fame.”
