Giants sign veteran punter amid surprise injury to starter

The Giants are signing veteran punter Matt Haack, ESPN reported Saturday.

The news comes one day after punter Jamie Gillan’s name surprisingly appeared on the injury report with an injury to his left hamstring strain (his kicking leg). He is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game vs. the Bengals.

The Giants clearly learned their lesson after already dealing with a special teams disaster in Week 2 — when they did not add a kicker to the roster, despite Graham Gano, who suffered an injury on the first play of the game, being listed on the injury report days prior.

They worked out several veteran punters on Friday, but ultimately landed on Haack.

The 30-year-old signed has been a journeyman throughout his seven-year career, first with Miami as an undrafted free agent from Arizona State in 2017, before bouncing around the league — joining the Bills, Colts, Cardinals’ practice squad, Browns and, most recently, the Bills again.

He has averaged 39.6 yards per punt with a 5.8% touchback rate. Thirty-seven percent of his career punts have landed inside the 20-yard line. Sunday’s game marks his 100th career game.

The Giants are 2-3 to start the 2024 season. They’re set to face a motivated Bengals team (1-4) on Sunday night football at MetLife Stadium.
