There is plenty of parity in the NBA’s Western Conference right now, and while plenty of people are picking the Oklahoma City Thunder to win the conference, one could just as easily go with the field instead.

The Sacramento Kings are a team that made the playoffs in 2023 but missed the playoffs last season, and they’re hoping to be much more competitive this season with new addition DeMar DeRozan.

On Monday, they traded forward Jalen McDaniels and a future second-round draft pick to the San Antonio Spurs, and Jason Anderson of the Sacramento Bee thinks Monday’s deal “could be a precursor to a bigger deal,” per NBACentral.

During the 2022-23 season, Sacramento somewhat unexpectedly finished third in the Western Conference and finished first in scoring, but they regressed last season.

At the same time, defense is their big weakness, and they could use more depth at the wing position.

Sacramento boasts point guard De’Aaron Fox, who averaged 26.6 points and 5.6 assists a game last season, and Domantas Sabonis, who has quietly become one of the best centers in the NBA and put up 19.4 points, 8.2 assists and a league-high 13.7 rebounds a game last year.

But with all the depth throughout the Western Conference, that terrific trio of Fox, Sabonis and DeRozan may not be enough for them to go deep in the postseason or even to win a mere playoff series.

The Kings haven’t won a playoff series since the 2004 season, and their long-suffering fan base is starving for some postseason success.
