Real Madrid’s La Liga fixture against Valencia is at risk of being postponed after flash floods swept through eastern Spain.

At least 72 people have died after torrential rain flooded roads and towns, with houses, buildings and cars being damaged. Authorities have told people to stay at home in the worst affected areas and to avoid all non-essential travel.

Valencia were due to play sixth-tier side Parla Escuela in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night, but that game has now been rearranged for Wednesday 6 November. Relevo state the likelihood of their fixture with Madrid on Saturday being rescheduled is “great”, with the region expected to announce an official period of mourning.

A statement from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) reads: “Due to the inclement weather caused by the DANA that has hit part of our geography in the last few hours, the signals planned for the next few hours in the dispute of the First Round of the Spanish Championship – Copa de SM el Rey may be altered.

“Specifically, the Sole Judge of Unofficial Competitions has adopted the decision to postpone the CP Parla Escuela – Valencia CF match, initially scheduled for 9:00 p.m. this Wednesday at the Las Americas Field in the Madrid town of Parla.

“Due to the current circumstances, there is a possibility that other matches scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, may have their schedules altered. The RFEF, in coordination with the different clubs, is working intensively to assess all possible scenarios and take the appropriate measures, which will be reported on shortly.”

Madrid added: “Real Madrid CF, its president and its Board of Directors would like to express their condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have died due to the storm that is affecting many areas of our country, especially in the provinces of Valencia and Albacete.

“Real Madrid expresses its deepest consternation and solidarity with all the people affected by this catastrophe, to whom it conveys all its support and affection.”
