Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has confirmed that he apologised to former manager Erik ten Hag following his sacking this week.
The Red Devils parted ways with the Dutchman on Monday following the club’s 2-1 Premier League loss to West Ham United on the road.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has since been placed on temporary charge and he will continue to stay in the role until the final international break of 2024.
Speaking after the 1-1 draw against Chelsea this evening, Fernandes said that he apologised to Ten Hag as he was responsible for his exit.
He said: “I spoke to the manager [Ten Hag] and apologised to him, I was disappointed he has gone and I tried to help him.
“I wasn’t scoring goals, we are not scoring goals and I feel responsible.
“I normally score a lot of goals but I always gave 100 percent. He is aware of that.”
United moved from 14th to 13th in the league after the draw against Chelsea. They remain six points adrift of the top four.
The Red Devils face PAOK at home in the Europa League on Thursday before hosting Leicester City in the league next Sunday.
Nistelrooy will be aiming to leave on a high with back-to-back wins. He is unlikely to continue as an assistant under new boss Ruben Amorim.
