Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems for Indian Army: Bharat Forge has secured the position of lowest bidder for a Rs 7,000 crore contract involving advanced towed artillery gun systems (ATAGS), developed by DRDO for the Indian Army. The contract will likely be distributed between Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) in a 60:40 ratio, as they are the developmental partners for these indigenous weapons.
The Indian Army has conducted comprehensive testing of these towed guns across various terrains, including desert regions and high-altitude areas in Sikkim, confirming their readiness for deployment. These ATAGS, created by DRDO to replace the current Bofors 155 mm artillery systems, have already found international success with exports to Armenia.
Official sources told ET that after reviewing commercial bids for 307 guns opened last week, Bharat Forge emerged as the lowest bidder. According to procurement regulations, TASL can secure 40% of the order if they agree to match their competitor’s price bid.
ATAGs bid
The Indian Army’s testing procedures included extensive firing exercises using backup battery systems at elevations exceeding 13,000 feet and performance evaluations in extremely cold conditions.
The Indian Army has also released a tender for next-generation artillery guns, requiring domestic design, development, and manufacturing. The initial requirement stands at 400 systems, with potential for increased orders as older equipment requires replacement.

The new towed gun system acquisition has attracted significant attention from private defense manufacturers who have made substantial investments in artillery system development.
Larsen & Toubro, which has previously delivered K9 Vajra self-propelled artillery guns to the Army, will compete for this contract.
Both Bharat Forge and TASL are expected to be primary competitors. The new 155mm/52 calibre guns will offer enhanced mobility and versatility compared to existing artillery systems, including ATAGS.
