By the time polls opened in Massachusetts on Tuesday, roughly a third of registered voters had already made their voices heard.
A total of 1,740,448 ballots were cast between vote-by-mail ballots and early voting ahead of the opening of polls at 7 a.m. on Tuesday. That total marks roughly 34% of registered voters in Massachusetts, according to data provided by Secretary of State William Galvin’s office.
Thus far, nearly 83% of mail-in ballots have been returned, with roughly 238,000 still outstanding.
In Boston, where there are more than 438,000 registered voters, more than 100,000 ballots have already been cast. Turnout for the city during mail-in and early voting stands at 23.3%.
Worcester‘s turnout numbers are similar to Boston’s, with about 24,000 ballots cast ahead of polls opening, good for 23.8% of registered voters in the Central Massachusetts city.
Turnout in Springfield was lower, with close to 13% of voters submitting mail-in ballots or voting early.
