Te Aroha by Shervani Hotels in Mukteshwar should be on your list for ideal getaways this winter.
In 1997, 32-year-old Sumant Batra from Delhi visited Dhanachuli village in Mukteshwar and experienced love at first sight. Even though he did not have a house of his own in Delhi, he decided to buy a hillock in the village and build his ideal summer house to escape the capital’s brash hustle. In 2009, having savoured several chilly seasons in his idyllic getaway, Batra decided to open up his home to us and build a hotel, now called Te Aroha by Shervani.
Nearly 15 years later, as I stepped foot into Batra’s former residence, his vision stood clear. Life slowed down as I arrived at Te Arora by Shervani and yet the crisp air and the sweet, smiling staff left me buzzed for my stay. Built like a step hill, the property is carefully designed in harmony with its natural surroundings, offering stunning views of the Himalayas at every turn.
My stay was booked for the highest floor in a room called ‘The Next Door’. Each room at Te Aroha follows a unique theme and offers a different experience. All the thoughtfully designed rooms combine rustic charm with modern luxury – a standout choice for those seeking top-notch hospitality. The four-poster beds and the charming furniture are reflective of the colonial design influences and are perfect for a cosy, relaxing stay.
Every room opens to a balcony glaring at the majestic Himalayas. However, the rooms on the top floor also have a beautiful apple orchard view to wake up to. Whether you’re enjoying a quiet moment in the room or taking in the breathtaking views from your balcony, you’re constantly reminded of the serene beauty of the Kumaoni hills.
But a trip to Kumaon is incomplete without devouring the delectable local produce. As part of my experiential stay, a family in the Kyari village hosted me for a hill-view lunch. Interestingly, this family was related to one of the hotel staff members, a testament to their ideology of harmonious coexistence. The kind ladies of the household prepared a special meal, showcasing all the unique foods local to Kumaoni cuisine made from fresh produce growing in their backyard.
However, back at Te Aroha, the brilliant chefs whipped up a feast daily, ensuring I got a full feel of the famous mountain hospitality. The resort’s in-house restaurant offers a variety of dishes, ranging from local Kumaoni specialities to continental favourites. The outdoor seating area with views of the mountains is perfect for enjoying meals, especially during sunrise or sunset.
Meanwhile, a bonfire was ready in the night to peacefully look at the starry sky with old Bollywood music keeping me company. As I half-hummed a song in front of the embers, I could understand what Batra must have felt when he first arrived here. His former residence was like a home to me and it still housed his love.
As the winter chill sets in, the highlands become a serene retreat. If you’re looking for an idyllic getaway nestled in the lap of the majestic Himalayas, Te Aroha by Shervani in Mukteshwar offers the perfect escape. The hospitality is impeccable, with attentive staff always willing to cater to your needs. Te Aroha by Shervani is a perfect blend of luxury, nature, and comfort. Whether you’re visiting for a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a solo retreat, this resort promises to offer an unforgettable experience. The combination of stunning views, excellent service, and luxurious amenities makes it a must-visit destination in Mukteshwar.
