K-Drama ‘Mr. Plankton’ explores the beauty of human existence

Director Hong Jong-chan’s latest project, Mr. Plankton, carries a profound message: every life has inherent value, purpose, and meaning.

The Netflix original Korean series follows Hae-jo and Jae-mi on an unconventional journey, exploring themes of self-discovery, love, and the significance of every individual.

“Everything, like plankton, carries inherent value and purpose,” Hong said during a Seoul press conference.

“While plankton may be tiny and nearly invisible, it plays a vital role in producing oxygen, helping sustain life on Earth. The title suggests that everyone, no matter how small they feel, plays an essential role in the world.”

The series revolves around Hae-jo (Woo Do-hwan), a man plagued by misfortune, and Jae-mi (Lee You-mi), his ex-girlfriend struggling with premature menopause.

As they embark on a journey to find Hae-jo’s biological father, they confront their past, relationships, and the meaning of life.

Hong praised scriptwriter Jo Yong’s approach, which delves deep into each character’s emotions. “I loved the drama’s road trip storyline, entertaining and joyful right to the end. I had no reason to turn it down.”

Woo Do-hwan described his character as a “drifter” without a clear goal, driven by the belief that he was born “by mistake.”

“The script was so interesting. I really wanted to do this and express the freedom within me, just like Hae-jo.”

Lee You-mi portrayed Jae-mi as “a flower” that blossoms despite adversity. “Even when she realizes her dream of becoming a mother can’t happen, she still finds strength to overcome her despair.”

Hong emphasized the importance of locations in the series, showcasing Korea’s stunning scenery. “The locations themselves contribute significantly to the drama… I hope a global audience will join in the journey and appreciate the beauty together.”

Mr. Plankton premieres on Netflix on Friday, November 8, offering a poignant exploration of human connection and purpose.
