Manchester United are prepared to promote Ruud van Nistelrooy to the head coach position if Erik ten Hag is sacked next month, according to ESPN.
The Red Devils have had a dismal start to the Premier League campaign and they have picked up only seven points from their opening six outings.
The club now face difficult trips to Porto and Aston Villa in the Europa League and Premier League respectively before the internationals.
If Ten Hag can’t significantly improve the club’s performances, the hierarchy are prepared to consider his departure during the upcoming break.
They are also prepared to promote assistant Van Nistelrooy to the manager’s job on a short-term basis until they appoint a possible successor.
There are no stand-out candidates to replace Ten Hag at the moment, but reports claim that Gareth Southgate and Graham Potter are options.
Inter Milan’s Simone Inzaghi has also been linked with the job, but he is unlikely to leave the Nerazzurri midway through the campaign.
