OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. (September 22, 2024) – Daniel Svärd tied for third overall as the Northwestern University men’s golf team saw action at the Fighting Illini Invitational over the weekend in Olympia Fields, Ill.
Competing as part of a 15-team field that featured 12 teams ranked in the top 25 of the latest Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches’ Poll, the ‘Cats posted a team score of 858 (283-285-290) to place 13th. No. 17 Georgia Tech (279-277-272=828) narrowly edged out No. 2 Arizona State (273-276-280=829) for the team title, while the Sun Devils’ Jose Luis Ballester finished with a 10-under-par 200 (64-66=70) to take home individual medalist honors.
Svärd dazzled at the Olympia Fields Country Club (par 70; 7,353 yards) en route to his ninth career top-five finish. The Jarfalla, Sweden native finished under-par across all three rounds of play, turning in a seven-under 203 (68-66-69), a total highlighted by a second-round four-under 66 that was just a stroke off his career low. Svärd, who piled up a team-high 12 birdies on the weekend, now has 27 rounds in the 60s during his time as a Wildcat.
Making his 2024-25 debut, Cameron Adam carded a second-round one-over 71 as part of a 219 (75-71-73) that saw him share 55th. Niall Shiels-Donegan bookended his weekend with rounds of 72 en route to a 220 (72-76-72) to tie for 60th, while Aidan Kramer shot an opening-round even-par 70 on the way to placing 64th with a 221 (70-72-79). Akshay Anand posted a 229 (73-80-76) to finish as part of a tie for 73rd.
