EVANSTON, Ill. (September 19, 2024) – Following back-to-back matchups at home, No. 20 Northwestern (5-2, 0-1 B1G) heads out to the Pacific Northwest this week to battle Washington in its Big Ten Conference road opener on Friday evening.  The ‘Cats and Huskies are slated to kickoff at 9:30 p.m. (CT) from Husky Soccer Stadium in Seattle, Wash.

Jose Contell converted from the penalty spot in the ninth minute of play as UCLA spoiled Northwestern’s Big Ten opener last Friday, dealing the Wildcats a 1-0 setback at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.  Rafael Ponce de León was credited with a pair of saves in goal as the ‘Cats closed the night with a 15-5 advantage in shots.

SCOUTING WASHINGTON
Washington enters Friday’s matchup with a pair of Big Ten contests under its belt, currently sitting at 0-1-1 in league play and 3-2-3 overall on the year.  Four-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year Jamie Clark’s team has played a challenging slate to open the season, battling five teams ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll across its first eight contests. Washington owns a pair of ranked wins on the year, having knocked off No. 4 Oregon State, 1-0, and No. 11 Seattle, 2-1.

The Huskies dropped their Big Ten opener, 1-0, at Michigan State last Friday before salvaging a point in a 1-1 draw at No. 22 Michigan on Monday afternoon. Peter Kingston levied the equalizer in the ninth minute of the meeting against the Wolverines.

Washington’s attack is led by the pairing on Kingston and Charlie Kosakoff, who both have two goals and two assists this season.  Chris Meyers has emerged as the Huskies’ top facilitator during the season’s opening stages, dishing out a team-best five assists, a mark that is tied for the Big Ten lead and ranks fourth nationally.  Joe Dale has also proven to be a threat in the attacking third, adding a goal and three assists across eight appearances.

Jadon Bowton has played in every minute in goal this season for Washington, posting a 1.13 goals against average and a 0.667 save percentage.  Bowton has a pair of four-save efforts to his name in 2024, most recently in the Huskies aforementioned win over Seattle.

Northwestern is 0-2-1 (.167) in Big Ten road openers under fourth-year head coach Russell Payne.
