While the nation celebrates Diwali with full fervour, with diyas and firecrackers, asthma patients need to take special precautions during such festivities due to excessive smoke and air pollution.
Asthma is a serious respiratory disease caused by swelling and contraction in the respiratory tract, leading to difficulty breathing. An asthma attack brought on by excessive pollution should be taken seriously.
Speaking to News18, Dr Bhagwan Mantri, a pulmonologist at Doctor Mantri Respiratory Clinic, Saket, New Delhi, said that asthma patients can suffer attacks due to severe pollution. Symptoms include difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest, coughing, and changes in voice. He suggested that anyone experiencing these symptoms should rest immediately.
During an attack, it is crucial for patient to stay calm and seek fresh air, Dr Mantri said adding that in case the health condition deteriorates, and the patient should immediately contact a doctor or visit the nearest hospital.
Dr Mantri emphasised that asthma patients should always carry their inhalers. Using an inhaler at the right time is crucial, he said instructing that one or two puffs at the onset of an attack can provide relief. However, if they do not get relief, the patient should seek immediate medical attention, he added.
Asthma patients should be well-versed in using their inhalers correctly. During an attack, it is advised to drink water or consume hot beverages to keep the body hydrated and soothe the respiratory tract. Ginger or basil tea can help relieve breathing difficulties.
The doctor also suggested that regular house-cleaning is vital to minimise indoor pollution. Dust, smoke, and pollution harm asthma patients. Installing an air purifier and keeping windows closed can prove to be beneficial. Additionally, smoking should be avoided and strong-smelling substances should be kept away. The environment at home should be kept clean and fresh.
Dr Mantri advised that regular health check-ups are crucial for asthma patients to understand their condition better and receive timely treatment.
