In ‘shocker,’ N.J. series creator ‘abandons’ new Netflix show just before wrapping

A new show starring some TV heavyweights was nearly finished filming when the series creator left the show.

Netflix’s “The Abandons” is a Western set in 1850s Oregon.

Emmy winner Gillian Anderson (”The X-Files,” “The Crown”) and five-time Emmy nominee Lena Headey (”Game of Thrones”) star in the series, created by Kurt Sutter.

Deadline reports that Sutter, a Rahway native who grew up in Clark and went on to create the FX shows “Sons of Anarchy” and the spinoff “Mayans M.C.,” left “The Abandons” in a “shocker” just three weeks before the series was scheduled to wrap in Calgary, Canada.

Sutter, 64, an alum of Roselle Catholic High School, also played “Big Otto” Delaney in “Sons of Anarchy.”

Sutter’s wife, “Married… with Children” star Katey Sagal, had a lead role as Gemma Teller Marrow in the show, which follows the members of a California motorcycle club.

In 2019, Sutter was fired from “Mayans M.C.” over complaints about his behavior.

He wrote the 2015 film “Southpaw,” directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jake Gyllenhaal. He was also a writer-producer on the FX series “The Shield.”

In April, Sutter and Sagal launched their podcast “PIE,” which he called “an intimate parlor conversation exploring the ingredients that ‘baked up’ each guest” and “a respectful, deep dive into nature and nurture — family, faith, friends, hometowns, schooling, mentors, tormentors.”
