An Assonet man is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, facing several charges including rape and strangulation, Freetown police announced Monday.

Brendan Nunes, 23, was arrested by Freetown police on Friday, according to the department in a statement.

His arrest followed an investigation led by the Massachusetts State Police and Freetown police detectives Shane Kelley and Christopher Medeiros, the statement read.

Nunes is accused of several offenses, including rape, drugging for sexual intercourse, strangulation/suffocation, intimidation of a witness and three counts of assault and battery, police said.

He was taken to the Bristol County House of Correction, where he is being held on $50,000 cash bail.

“Our officers, working closely with the Massachusetts State Police, demonstrated strong investigative work that led to this arrest,” Freetown police Chief Scott Rose said in the statement. “This case reflects our commitment to thoroughly investigating serious crimes and holding offenders accountable.”

Nunes is expected to appear in Fall River District Court on Tuesday.
