Meat recall: Nearly 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat products could be contaminated

The USDA is recalling almost 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products because of possible Listeria contamination.

BrucePac — an Oklahoma-based company that produces pre-cooked proteins such as chicken, beef, turkey and pork — is recalling roughly 9,986,245 pounds of products, the USDA said in an online recall Wednesday.

The recall is labeled as a “Class I” or “High Risk,” meaning that there is a good chance that eating these products can cause serious health problems or death.

The impacted products, which were produced from June 19 to Oct. 8, were shipped to stores, restaurants, and institutions nationwide. The USDA has urged these establishments not to serve or use the products.

Anyone who bought the ready-to-eat meat products should throw them away immediately or return them. The meat and poultry products bear the establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205,” according to the USDA.

Consuming products contaminated with Listeria can cause a serious infection known as listeriosis. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms, the USDA said.

So far there have been no confirmed reports of anyone getting sick from eating the contaminated meat, but those worried about getting sick should contact their doctor.

Consumers with food safety questions can call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or send a question via email to [email protected].
