Every year during the Navratri, a unique custom takes place in Sadu Mata Ni Pol, a locality in Ahmedabad. On the eighth night of the festival, men from the Barot community put on sarees and perform Garba– – a ceremonial dance. This astonishing tradition has been in practice for over 200 years and is deep-seated in a heart-wrenching story.
The origin of the custom
The practice can be traced back to a story of a woman named Saduben, who is believed to have strived for help from the Barot men against a Mughal nobleman.Regrettably, they were unsuccessful in protecting her, resulting in a dreadful tragedy that led to the loss of her child. In her anguish, Saduben cursed the men, declaring that their future generations would live in shame, guilt, and fear. This curse urged the neighborhood to develop a tradition as a manifestation of redemption.
Celebrating with Garba
During Navratri, Sadu Ni Pol transforms into a beautifully vibrant and lively gathering place of activity. Locals as well as visitors gather in the cramped streets, where men, dressed in vibrant sarees, perform on the dynamic beats of Sheri Garba. The celebration not only demonstrates their historical and cultural heritage but also serves as an important community gathering.
Honoring Sadu Mata
To honor and reconcile with the spirit of Sadu Mata and release from the curse, a temple was established in her regard. Each year, the men perform Garba as a way to express their gratitude and humility. Many attendees believe that Mata has sanctified their families and granted their wishes, including success in business and good health.
