Traffic jams are a frequent issue on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, particularly during morning and evening rush hours. To alleviate this congestion, Haryana and the Central government are stepping up efforts, with discussions centred around several key projects. These include a 3-km stretch of the Nelson Mandela Marg-MG Road link, a 5.5-km bypass from MG Road to Gurugram-Faridabad Road, and an 8.3-km link from Dhanchiri Camp to MG Road. In a recent meeting between Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, they focused on these three projects. If the 3-km stretch of the Nelson Mandela Marg-MG Road link becomes operational, it is expected to ease congestion, not only on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway but also on the Mehrauli-Gurugram Road. Experts suggest that designating this segment as a National Highway could streamline development. Given the significant traffic volume, decisions on these projects are anticipated soon.
The Haryana government is particularly focused on enhancing connectivity from Nelson Mandela Road Extension to the intersection of MG Road and Gurugram-Faridabad Road, as per reports. They have proposed an elevated road along this 3-km stretch, but a comprehensive study will determine whether an elevated structure or a tunnel is more feasible, given that the route passes through the ridge area.
Preliminary estimates suggest that constructing an elevated road from MG Road to Gurugram-Faridabad Road would cost around Rs 2,000 crore. If a tunnel is deemed necessary, costs could rise to Rs 4,000 crore. The link from Dhanchiri Camp to MG Road is projected to require about Rs 1,000 crore. These projects underscore the government’s commitment to addressing the region’s congestion issues by exploring robust connectivity solutions.
Sources say that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) or the Road Transport Ministry can do a detailed study only when these parts are declared national highways. Sources said that Union Road Transport Secretary V Umashankar, who has previously been the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Haryana, was also present in the meeting between Gadkari and Saini. It is expected that there will be no problem in declaring the parts from Nelson Mandela Road to MG Road and MG Road to Gurugram-Faridabad Road as national highways.
