Romano Says Serie A Side Are “Determined To Keep” £42M Midfielder Who City And Arsenal Have Been Linked With

Torino are “determined to keep” Manchester City and Arsenal transfer target Samuele Ricci, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Reports in recent days have suggested the two Premier League sides are lining up bids for the Italian international when the transfer window reopens but, writing in his Daily Briefing column, Romano has poured cold water on the speculation:

“All the rumours linking him with a move away from Turin is just the media as English clubs have been scouting the midfielder but there have been no approaches, talks, or proposals.”

“Torino are determined to keep him until at least the end of the season. For those who may have not seen Ricci play, I can tell you that he’s a quality midfielder, with great passing, great vision and a good personality.”

Why are City reportedly interested in Ricci?

The 23-year-old has been touted as a potential replacement for Rodri, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

As Romano points out, though, Torino are reluctant to sell one of their prized assets. A bid of around €50m (£42m) may be required to secure his services, but it has been reported that City may not go any higher than €30m (£25m). That’s a big gap to bridge in talks.

What has the player said about his future?

Ricci is aware of the links to Manchester City. Asked about the speculation last weekend, the Italian said that he is trying to stay grounded:

“I’ve learned to understand a little: as soon as you do well, lots of things come out. They’re nice, but you shouldn’t let it get to your head. I still have to improve on many things. I look at them, friends send me articles. However, I think more about concrete things and that is the green rectangle [pitch].”
