E-commerce players have recorded total sales of about Rs 1 lakh crore (about $11.9 billion) during the festive month ended last week. This was over 23 per cent jump as compared with last year’s festive sales of Rs 81,000 crore, according to an ET report citing e-commerce consultancy Datum Intelligence.
Demand from non-metro consumers and increased purchases of luxury brands boosted transactions, according to the report.
In the year 2022, the festive season recorded a total e-commerce sales of Rs 69,800 crore.
According to Datum, during the latest festive season of 2024, more than half of the Rs 1 lakh crore demand was registered in the first week. Goods worth Rs 55,000 ($6.5 billion) were sold during Flipkart’s Big Billion Days and Amazon’s Great Indian Festival, which started on September 26.
The sales slowed in the third week before again gaining pace, it added.
Some Flipkart sellers witnessed a 40-50 per cent year-on-year growth this season, while Amazon’s 85 per cent of customers were from non-metro cities.
“There was increased demand from tier II-III and beyond, reflected across categories including smartphones, television sets, appliances and fashion,” said Satish Meena, adviser at Datum Intelligence, according to ET.
Smartphones, grocery, beauty and personal care products, as well as home and kitchen, made up a significant portion of sales, according to the ET report citing industry executives.
About 65 per cent of smartphone sales this season took place online.
Apart from this, during the latest festive season, the auto sector also witnessed huge sales in October, with Mahindra and Mahindra posting its highest monthly sales ever with 96,648 units, marking a 20 per cent year-on- year increase.
Bajaj Auto reported a 2 per cent increase in total vehicle sales, including commercial vehicles and exports, at 4,79,707 units in October this year, from 4,71,188 units in the same month of 2023.
