Say Goodbye To Eye Allergies: Transform Your Home Care Routine Today – News18

Allergies to the eyes can cause a great deal of irritation and discomfort.

Eye allergies can cause significant discomfort, but by identifying the common triggers you can take proactive steps to protect your eye health.

Eye allergies can be quite irritating, leading to significant discomfort. It’s important to know how to protect your eyes from common allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander and indoor mould. By understanding these triggers, you can take proactive measures to minimise exposure and safeguard your eye health.

Allergies occur when the body encounters an allergen, prompting the immune system to release histamine, a chemical that causes blood vessels to inflame. This immune response typically results in symptoms such as itching, redness, swelling, and excessive tearing. If left unaddressed, these symptoms can disrupt your daily activities and impact your quality of life.

Symptoms of eye allergies:

  1. Itching:A strong urge to rub or scratch the eyes is common, often leading to further irritation.
  2. Redness:The eyes may appear pink or red due to dilated blood vessels in the conjunctiva.
  3. Swelling:Puffiness can develop in the eyelids and surrounding areas, which may be particularly noticeable.
  4. Watery Eyes:Excessive tear production can result in watery eyes, often accompanied by a clear, watery discharge.
  5. Blurred Vision:Temporary blurriness may occur, particularly if the eyes are watery or swollen.

In a conversation with HT Lifestyle, Dr Jay Goyal, an Eye Surgeon, LASIK and Retina Specialist, and Director at Surya Eye Hospital, emphasised that nearly all allergies cause some level of eye discomfort. He noted, “Typical symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis include a burning sensation, itching, redness in the eyes, swollen eyelids and a sensation as if something is in the eye.”

Tips to avoid eye allergies:

  1. Identify and avoid triggers:Keep track of your symptoms and note which allergens trigger them. Common triggers include pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and mould. Once identified, take steps to limit exposure.
  2. Keep windows closed:During high pollen seasons, keep windows closed to prevent allergens from entering your home. Use air conditioning instead.
  3. Use air purifiers:Invest in HEPA air purifiers to help filter out allergens in your home, particularly in bedrooms and living areas.
  4. Regular cleaning:Dust and vacuum your home regularly using a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Wash bedding and curtains in hot water to eliminate dust mites.
  5. Use protective eyewear: When outdoors, wear sunglasses or protective goggles to shield your eyes from allergens.

Home care remedies for eye allergies:

  1. Wash bedding frequently:Change and wash sheets, pillowcases, and blankets in hot water weekly to eliminate dust mites and allergens.
  2. Keep pets clean:Bathe and groom pets regularly to reduce dander. Consider keeping them out of bedrooms and other allergen-sensitive areas.
  3. Cold compress:Applying a cold compress over closed eyes can help reduce swelling and soothe itching. Use a clean, damp cloth or a cold pack wrapped in a towel for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Avoid allergen exposure:When outdoors, wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from pollen and other allergens. When you return home, change your clothes and wash your face to remove any allergens.
  5. Use humidifiers: If your home is dry, using a humidifier can add moisture to the air, helping to keep your eyes hydrated and reduce irritation.
