Sophie Turner has recently slammed press for “misquoting” her comments on the struggle of being a single mother.
On September 30, the Game of Thrones star took to her Instagram Story and clarified her comments after giving an interview to the UK’s Sunday Times about her upcoming series, Joan.
“I have been widely misquoted today in publications where I have ‘stated’ that ‘it’s such a struggle being a single mother,’” said the 28-year-old.
Sophie wrote, “I’d like to clarify that I was talking about the character of Joan that I play and was not referring to myself.”
The actress revealed that she wasn’t talking about her own experience as a parent in the previous interview. She was talking about her character Joan Hannington in the new series, a notorious jewel thief who turned to crime in an attempt to get her daughter out of foster care after leaving an abusive relationship.
Sophie also expressed gratitude for the support that she has in raising her two daughters, whom she shares with her former husband Joe Jonas.
“I am very fortunate personally to have a lot of help around me, which is not the case for a lot of people,” she remarked.
Sophie stated, “I applaud all single mothers doing it alone.”
Elsewhere in her interview, the actress reflected on motherhood journey.
“You go to work, you’re shamed. If you don’t go to work, you’re shamed,” she noted.
Sophie however mentioned, “Joan changed me quite a lot. From utter desperation comes so much will and ambition. The series came around at a time in my life where I had to be ambitious and I had to have such strong will and fight against the forces.”
“Joan gave me a lot of strength. She also taught me how to do a good ring swap in a handbag,” she added.
