In the enchanting Hingol National Park of Balochistan, Pakistan is situated Baba Chandragup, the greatest mud volcano in the country. Measuring 330 feet tall and 49 feet wide, this one-of-a-kind geomorphological feature is not only an extraordinary site but also possesses immense spiritual significance for Hindu Bhakts, as it is a symbol of Lord Shiva.
A pilgrim’s journey
Baba Chadragup is a note-worthy stop for those on the Hinglaj Yatra, an annual holy pilgrimage to Shri Hinglaj Mata temple, among the 51 Shakti Peethas and one of the three located in Pakistan. For several pilgrims, visiting Baba Chandragup holds immense value before they can make their way to the temple. Every year, a vast number of Hindu devotees commerce the journey, confronting difficulties and challenging paths to arrive at this sacred site.

The night before their uphill journey, pilgrims meditate and fast, emphasizing and reflecting on the wrongdoings they intend to confess. This night of preparation supports them in focus and connecting with their unwavering faith.
Rituals and offering
Devotees climb the volcano’s slopes at dawn, and traditionally they are known to prepare rotis from ingredients brought by fellow pilgrims, which they later present at the summit, along with dal, betel nuts, and coconuts. These special offerings symbolize their gratitude as well as hope for blessings.
Once they reach the peak, a beautifully unique ritual takes place- – pilgrims make their introductions, announcing their names and where they come from, before confessing their sins. A ‘charidar’ who is well-versed in these customs, helps them understand the bubbling mud and the direction of the wind to assess whether their sins have been forgiven. This ritual uniquely unites nature with faith, influencing the environment to be a part of the spiritual experience.
