Monica Barbaro has received her fair share of strange, unsolicited suggestions over the years.
According to Entertainment Weekly, during a panel discussion at the Savannah Film Festival, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, the actress who plays Lt. Natasha “Phoenix” Trace in Top Gun: Maverick shared one bizarre advice she got while on the set of her first commercial shoot.
“I remembered this the other day, the weirdest advice I ever got was the very first commercial thing I ever shot,” she recalled. “There was a woman doing my makeup, and she told me I had really long eyelashes, and I should probably trim them. I didn’t take it like that. I mean, I was just like, ‘Oh, okay.'”
The 34-year-old actress emphasised the importance of trusting your instincts and filtering out opinions that don’t feel right.
“In my mind, I was like, ‘I’m not going to do that,'” she added. “And sometimes I just think it’s like when you hear advice that you’re just not sure of and you’re like, I don’t know, just trust that instinct. You could be told to do crazy s— like cut all your eyelashes off.”
Ignoring the odd suggestion, Barbaro is now looking forward to the release of her upcoming movie, A Complete Unknown, Bob Dylan’s biopic where she plays folk singer Joan Baez.
