The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Soccer team scored two goals each in the first and second periods to defeat rival North Penn-Mansfield 4-1 during Senior Night on Wednesday, October 9.

Both teams also played a modified (9-on-9) JV game that ended in a scoreless tie.

Junior Lily Wagner put Wellsboro on the scoreboard first just over five and a half minutes into the game. Her shot hit off the crossbar and bounced into the goal. Senior Cassidy Mitchell later converted a cross from freshman Kate Bryant for the score with 10:26 remaining to make it 2-0.

Wellsboro struck first to start the second period as senior Madelynn Losinger converted another Bryant pass in under the first two minutes to increase Wellsboro’s lead to 3-0.

North Penn-Mansfield’s Iris Irwin scored with 25:52 remaining in the game to end the shut out.

Wellsboro’s final goal was scored with exactly 18 minutes remaining by freshman Luna Moyer, and assisted by junior Emily Benjamin.

Wellsboro out shot Mansfield 14-4 on the evening and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore Jadyn Dunlap recorded three saves in goal.

“I’m very proud of our six seniors, some of which have been playing soccer for more than a decade,” head coach Jason Gehman said after the game. “It was wonderful to celebrate them as they all formed the starting lineup for a match against North Penn-Mansfield! The Hornets will have a hard time filling some big boots next year as these amazing young ladies graduate and go on to do great things!”

The win improves Wellsboro to 4-7-2 overall and 3-6-2 in the NTL Standings. The team returns to action Friday evening at Towanda.
