A significant portion of Ratan Tata’s wealth will be transferred to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF).

Ratan Tata passed away on October 9.

Ratan Tata was one of India’s most influential business figures. He passed away on October 9, and has left behind a remarkable legacy, including his property, shares, and personal assets, all carefully outlined in his will. While the Tata Group’s business legacy is now being managed by Noel Tata, the question of Ratan Tata’s personal wealth and its beneficiaries has been gaining attention. A significant portion of his wealth, primarily his shares in various Tata Group companies, including Tata Motors and Tata Sons, will be transferred to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF), a non-profit organisation established in 2022. This move is in line with the Tata family’s long-standing tradition of donating shares to charitable trusts, ensuring that the wealth continues to contribute to society. Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran may lead the foundation, according to some reports.

Regarding Ratan Tata’s personal properties, his iconic residence, Halekai House in Colaba, Mumbai, is owned by Ewart Investments, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Sons. The decision on the future of this property will rest with Ewart. He also designed the Alibaug bungalow, although its future remains unclear. The family home in Juhu, inherited by Ratan Tata and other family members, has reportedly been on the market for over two decades and may soon be sold.

Among Ratan Tata’s personal assets, his prized collection of 20-30 vintage cars, currently housed at Halekai House and the Taj Wellington Mews service apartments, is under consideration. There are discussions about possibly showcasing this collection in a museum in Pune or putting it up for auction under the Tata Group’s supervision.

Reportedly, Shantanu Naidu, Ratan Tata’s close assistant in his later years, is mentioned in the will, suggesting he may receive a portion of the assets or properties. Ratan Tata gave up his stake in Naidu’s joint venture, Goodfellows, and he forgave the personal loan Naidu had taken for overseas education. Specific details on this remain private for now.
