Josef Newgarden delivered a historic back-to-back victory at the Indianapolis 500, edging out Pato O’Ward in a tense last-lap battle to win the 2026 edition of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
The American becomes the first driver in 22 years to win consecutive Indy 500 titles, joining an elite group of only a handful of drivers in the event’s long history.
Final-lap showdown decides the race
The race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway came down to a dramatic final-lap duel, with Newgarden overtaking O’Ward in the closing moments to seal victory.
The finish capped a chaotic and unpredictable race that featured:
- A four-hour delay due to severe storms
- Multiple caution periods throughout the day
- A sunset finish just before the 8:15pm local curfew
Despite the interruptions, all 200 laps of the 2.5-mile oval were completed in front of a crowd of more than 300,000 fans.
Historic achievement at the Brickyard
Newgarden’s win places him among an exclusive group of drivers who have successfully defended an Indy 500 title. The last driver to achieve back-to-back victories was more than two decades ago.
The result also marks another milestone for Team Penske, extending its dominance at the Indianapolis 500 under team owner Roger Penske.
“They crushed it”
Speaking after the race, Newgarden praised his team following a demanding day of racing:
“I’m just so proud of this team. They crushed it — crushed it.”
He also took time to acknowledge key members of his crew who were not present after recent controversies surrounding the team.

Controversy and redemption narrative
Newgarden’s victory comes against a backdrop of scrutiny following earlier sanctions related to push-to-pass rule violations at a previous IndyCar event.
An internal investigation led to disqualifications and penalties for several team personnel, but Newgarden dismissed criticism after Sunday’s win, emphasizing the team’s effort and resilience.
Strong competition from O’Ward and Dixon
Pato O’Ward pushed Newgarden all the way to the finish, narrowly missing out on what would have been a career-defining Indy 500 victory.
Meanwhile, veteran Scott Dixon completed the podium in third place, adding another strong result to his long Indianapolis résumé.
What this means going forward
Newgarden’s back-to-back Indy 500 triumph reinforces his status as one of IndyCar’s modern elite drivers. His ability to perform under pressure, particularly in late-race scenarios, once again proved decisive.
With momentum firmly on his side, he now heads deeper into the season as a leading contender for the championship.
