The future of Connor Hellebuyck in Winnipeg has become one of the biggest stories ahead of the 2026-27 NHL season. The star goaltender has publicly confirmed that he wants to leave the Winnipeg Jets, bringing months of speculation about his future into the open.
Hellebuyck revealed that he privately requested a trade several months ago. He had initially chosen to keep the situation away from the public while allowing the Jets time to consider their options. With training camp approaching, however, the 33-year-old decided it was time to make his position clear.
The announcement represents a major moment for both Hellebuyck and Winnipeg. The Michigan native has spent his entire 11-season NHL career with the Jets after the organization selected him with the 130th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Draft.
During that time, he developed into one of the most successful goaltenders of his generation. Hellebuyck has won the Vezina Trophy three times and also captured the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player following an outstanding 2024-25 season. He was also part of the United States team that won Olympic gold at Milano Cortina 2026.
His latest NHL season was more difficult. Hellebuyck finished 2025-26 with a 23-23-11 record, a 2.86 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage across 57 appearances. The Jets also experienced a major decline after winning the Presidents’ Trophy in 2024-25, finishing last season with 82 points and missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Questions about Hellebuyck’s future had already emerged before his public announcement. Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff confirmed in June that the organization was listening to trade offers, although he did not reveal at the time whether the goaltender had formally asked to leave.
Following Hellebuyck’s announcement, Cheveldayoff acknowledged that the player had been open with the organization about wanting a change. Winnipeg is continuing to work through the situation, but no trade has been announced.
Finding the right deal may not be straightforward. Hellebuyck remains an elite goaltender with an impressive record, but acquiring him would require another team to take on a significant long-term commitment. He is entering the third season of the seven-year, $59.5 million contract he signed with Winnipeg in October 2023. The agreement carries an average annual value of $8.5 million.
That combination of ability, experience and contract size could make negotiations complicated. Winnipeg will naturally want a strong return for a player who has been central to the franchise for more than a decade, while interested teams will need enough salary-cap flexibility to accommodate his deal.
The Jets have already added another experienced option in goal. Stuart Skinner signed a two-year contract with Winnipeg in July, giving the organization additional depth if Hellebuyck ultimately departs.
For Hellebuyck, the request appears to be about finding a new direction at this stage of his career. He expressed gratitude toward Winnipeg and its supporters while making clear that he believes moving on is the right choice for himself and his family.
Attention will now turn to the trade market as training camp approaches. A three-time Vezina winner becoming available is a significant development for any NHL team looking for an upgrade in goal.
Whether Winnipeg finds an acceptable offer quickly or the situation continues into training camp remains uncertain. What is now clear is that Hellebuyck is ready for a new chapter, potentially bringing one of the most successful goaltending eras in Jets history to an end.
